Tulum Vacation Rentals

Tulum is full of luxurious and quaint boutique hotels that are charming and beautiful. An alternative option is booking your own private vacation rental, or condo. Tucked throughout the shoreline of this amazing Caribbean village you will find properties for rent that can provide the setting for an unforgettable vacation.

ADVANTAGES OF VACATION RENTALS

This is an excellent option if you want more privacy or if you’re traveling with multiple family members or a larger group. You can really get away from the hordes of tourists and not be forced to share your vacation experience with strangers! That can make for a much more restful, refreshing holiday than a resort could offer. You also have a lot more freedom to make your own schedule [or lack of schedule; it is vacation after all] and choose your own adventure. However, it also means that you might have to take care of a few things that would typically be provided by a hotel or resort.

An obvious example of that is in the area of food. Most hotels–and absolutely all resorts–will provide one or multiple restaurants to dine at during your stay. When you choose a vacation rental though, you may have to do a little more research in advance. Which restaurants are nearby that you might want to visit? How well-equipped is the kitchen for making meals? Is there a BBQ grill available? Is there a grocery store close to your vacation home? Many travelers enjoy having more control in this area, and renting a vacation home gives them that freedom.

TIP: Many rental companies will stock your vacation home with basic groceries upon your arrival [for a fee]. They may have a checklist of items you can request, including alcoholic beverages.

TYPES OF VACATION RENTALS

BEACHFRONT RENTALS

The most popular option for travelers. There are fantastic options for beachfront rentals. These rentals vary in size and shape, but will allow anywhere from a couple to a large group to rent a condo or house on the beach. Wake up, sip your coffee watching the waves roll up onto the sand, and then soak up the sun all day.

ECONOMY RENTALS

If you are more concerned about the destination than the accommodations, there are plenty of affordable options available to you. Apartments or studios that are off the beach, set in local neighborhoods, provide you with a clean and often cute place to get a good night’s sleep. You can spend money on food and fun, not on accommodations.

ECONOMY PLUS RENTALS

Similar to the economy rentals, you can find a vacation rental that is possibly still located in town but provides you with a nicer home, better amenities, more rooms and larger square footage. Better yet, some may be close to the beach but not directly on it. Balconies or rooftop terraces may provide ocean views in some cases.

FINDING A TULUM VACATION RENTAL

There are many ways of finding a rental, whether through VRBO, Air B&B, or various other internet search options. Many of the finest rentals will be managed by a local rental/property management company while others may be rented privately.

TIP: We encourage you to visit our recommended companies as they are well-established and professional. Either way you go, make sure you do a bit of research to determine if you are renting from a reliable renter. Are there testimonials from other visitors? Is it a well-established company? Don’t let this scare you though; the vast majority of rental companies are quite reliable and safe.

Renters should always confirm with the owner or vacation rental agency what is included to avoid surprises at check-in.

It would be an awful surprise for a guest to arrive at a vacation rental expecting it to be fully equipped only to find out the linens and other common items are not included.  This is very rare anymore, and unheard of from reputable rental companies, but renters that decide to rent from an individual should make certain that these items are in fact included.

RENTAL TIPS & CAUTION

GETTING THERE

From Cancun’s International Airport, Tulum is about an hour and a half’s drive on well-paved, divided highway [118km/73mi]. This can make for a longer, more tiring day of travel, but Tulum’s beautiful beaches and secluded feel are well worth it! If you’re looking to get away from the “Spring Break” party atmosphere that permeates the Riviera Maya region most of the year, Tulum is a great choice.

There are many options for arriving in Tulum, but be aware that when you rent a vacation home your options may dwindle a little, depending on the location of the home. Tulum has two main areas: the town site which straddles the highway and the beach road. So you can easily take a bus from the airport to Tulum town site, and then take a taxi to your vacation rental. If you plan to stay several weeks, renting a vehicle may be a good idea so you can really explore the area and enjoy all that it has to offer!

TIP: Transportation to the beach road will be more costly, since it is off the beaten track. It runs parallel with the coast all the way down to the Sian Kaan Bio-reserve and town of Punta Allen. From the highway to the beach road is no more than a 10-minute drive.
