Very Best Time to Visit Isla Mujeres

There’s no wrong time of year to stroll the silky-white sands of the Yucatan. But the bustling nightlife of Cancun, the isolation of Holbox, and the crowds on Playa del Carmen’s best beaches aren’t for everyone. Many travelers instead prefer the laid-back lifestyle on the small island of Isla Mujeres.

The island boasts more than white-sand beaches. It is known as a hidden gem for swimmers and snorkelers looking to relax in crystalline shallow waters, sitting where the Caribbean Sea meets the tranquil Gulf of Mexico. Here, you can enjoy activities like snorkeling with whale sharks, kayaking, zipping around the sights on scooters or golf carts, and lounging on beautiful beaches without the crowds of more famous destinations like Tulum.

Choosing when to plan your Mexican Caribbean getaway just got a little easier. We’ll compare high-season and low-season attractions from Playa Norte to Punta Sur so that you can avoid the worst of hurricane season and choose the best time of year to book your all-inclusive resort.

Isla Mujeres in Winter

The Yucatan Peninsula region is at its prime in the “winter” months, making it the perfect escape for Americans looking to ditch the snow. Notably, this is the high and dry season on the island, which means you’ll also see the largest influx of crowds during this time, alongside the perfect weather and welcoming turquoise waters. Fortunately for Isla Mujeres, this is still only a fraction of the tourism that destinations like Cozumel receive.

Wintertime Weather

While the winter months of December, January, and February are relatively cool, daily temperatures are still in the high 70s and low 80s. You’re unlikely to see any rain or nighttime temps below the high 60s.

Best Things to Do in Winter

The abundance of activities offered in an Isla Mujeres winter is staggering. The Maya is blessed with clear water and welcoming land temps, so your exploration options are endless. Here are our favorite things to do in peak season.

  • Snorkel the Manchones Reef in search of Parrotfish and Barracuda.
  • Enjoy the sargassum-free beaches. Sargassum is a seaweed that is more commonly seen on the shoreline in months of tumultuous weather in the Yucatan. Playa El Pescador, Playa Tiburón, Playa Paraíso, and Playa Na Balam are all excellent choices with fewer crowds.
  • Rent a scooter or golf cart and whip around the coastal drive to Punta Sur, soaking in the views.
  • Explore the bustling markets and full shops in El Centro.
  • Lounge on Playa Lancheros and dine on their locally famous Tikin Xic fish, a Mayan specialty.
  • Scuba or snorkel the MUSA, a unique collection of sunken statues and art.
  • Escape the crowds and visit Garrafon Park. It is a pristine beach/park with ziplines, kayaks, a small beach club, and the longest coral reef in the Northern Hemisphere.

Winter Events

As if the activities weren’t enough to keep you occupied, the number of events the island hosts during the wintertime is no shorter. Here are some of our favorites.

  • Navidad Festivities: Throughout the month of December, there are plenty of Christmas events to make you feel right at home.
  • New Year’s Eve Bash: This is the season’s biggest party, with festivities kicking off in Townsquare around 10 PM. (December 31st)
  • Island Time Fishing Tournament: A catch-and-release sailfish extravaganza. (Mid February)
  • Island Time Music Festival: A 3-day philanthropic Nashville-style music event that helps to raise money for the children of Isla Mujeres. (Mid February)

Isla Mujeres in Spring

During March, April, and May, you’ll begin to see the wintertime crowds taper off while the excellent weather and water conditions remain. This is the best time of year to visit if you are concerned about crowds but don’t want to sacrifice the weather. It’s also known to be a slightly cheaper time to visit the island as all-inclusive resorts will run “off-season” deals as the season progresses.

Springtime Weather

Heat and humidity begin to rise, with highs entering the 90s and never dipping below 70. This time of year is also known to be the clearest, with the fewest predictions of overcast skies in the forecast. By May, however, the precipitation will begin to rise as the most tropical season is welcomed to the island.

Best Things to Do in the Spring

  • Gather your pesos and try your hand at fishing! Fishing charters start around $200 and are a great family-friendly activity when the seas are placid.
  • Visit the most popular beaches like Playa Norte and nearby Playa Sol now that the major winter crowds have subsided. Playa Norte was named one of the best beaches in the world!
  • Stroll the boardwalk from the Islands north to the south, enjoying panoramic views on a sun-soaked day.
  • Revel in the last months of crystal clear waters with a dive on El Farito or one of the other popular island dive sites.
  • Take a boat tour to Isla Contoy. A lovely seabird paradise that doubles as a national park.

Spring Events

  • Carnival Isla Style. Turns out you don’t have to go all the way to Brazil for a good Carnival celebration. You can experience the music, colors, and festive atmosphere right here in this beachfront atmosphere. (February and March)

Isla Mujeres in Summer

This is the low season for Isla Mujeres. June, July, and August mark storm season in most of the Yucatan.

Many people visit the island during this time of year because Isla Mujeres is truly a year-round destination. Summer is also the prime time of year for whale sharks to migrate into the temperate waters, which is enough reason to plan your visit!

Summertime Weather

Channel your inner iguana and relish the summer heat. Perfect for lounging, pool-hopping, and refreshing dips in the ocean. The summer months bring temps up to a balmy 90 degrees without the overcast skies of fall to block the toastiest of the sun’s rays. If you’re wanting to spend some time in the water, this is the month for you.

Best Things to Do in Summer

  • Swim with whale sharks. The large mammals migrate to these waters from May to August.
  • Shop for some local spirits! Plenty of tequila bottle shops are on the island for those looking to craft their cocktails.
  • Support the local women by buying artisanal crafts from Cooperativa de Mujeres Artesanas de Isla Mujeres. These make the best souvenirs!
  • Take a Yoga Class to recenter yourself. Or escape from the rain on a particularly overcast day.
  • Book a stay at a luxurious resort with a spectacular pool for cheaper! The low season brings low prices, and opulent resorts like Privilege Aluxes can be bought for better prices. Explore our favorite resorts (with stunning pools) in Isla Mujeres.

Summer Events

  • Founder’s Month of Isla Mujeres. Every August, Isla Mujeres celebrates its long history from the time when it was just a sacred sanctuary to celebrate Ixchel to the vibrant paradise it is now.

Isla Mujeres in the Fall

Fall is the best time of year to celebrate the cultural activities on the island. During September, October, and November, you’ll have a beautiful beach paradise, mostly all to yourself, as most people plan their stays for the winter months. This means prices on the island plummet, and you can make all the last-minute bookings you want.

Fall Weather

While rainfall increases, crowds decrease, and temperatures stay pleasant and warm. Expect temperatures in the high 80s, and while you’ll experience many overcast days, it definitely won’t stop you from enjoying the beautiful beaches.

Best Things to Do in the Fall

  • Head to the Crayola House and marvel at the street art and colorful streets along the way. You can also stop in at Isla Mujeres cemetery to see the intricate tombs and monuments.
  • Dive into Miguel Hidalgo Street. This is where you’ll find the bulk of all the best shops in town.
  • Tuck into some top-notch tacos at one of the local streetside stands. Taqueria Los Burritos and Tacos Milo’s are some of the local favorites.
  • Visit Hacienda Mundaca and search for the lanky local iguanas among the rocks.
  • Plan a visit to the mainland! Hop on the Ultramar Ferry and book a round-trip to the mainland to see some of the cultural sights like Chichén Itzá.

Fall Events

  • Mexico’s Independence Day. In mid-September, you’ll encounter fireworks and parades to celebrate our Red, White, and Green pride. (Mid September)
  • Luz y Vida Entre Vivos y Muertos. We’ve turned the typical Day of the Dead celebration into a 5-day affair. This event is totally free to attend and fun for the whole family! (October to November)
