Being an island, Holbox’s cuisine is rich with fresh fish and seafood. Local fishermen serve the restaurants and hotels, so getting the ‘Catch of the Day’ on any menu is pretty much guaranteed to be a great, fresh option. Lobster is popular on Holbox as well as octopus and red snapper among other fish and seafood. In fitting with the laid-back island vibe there are a few small eateries run by locals that serve honest, flavorsome and good-value food. Recently, some great sushi places have opened up on Holbox as well as a few larger lively restaurants and even a couple of fine-dining establishments. For the sweet-toothed there are now also great ice cream and gelato places on in town.
Viva Zapata
A lively and fun restaurant in the center of town that stretches from a relaxed bar area out to an alfresco seating area, Viva Zapata serves tasty selections of seafood to share. The margaritas are perfectly mixed and there is a great selection of mezcals and other spirits. The service is friendly and many of the staff speaks English. Most nights there is live music to accompany your meal.
El Sushi de Holbox
Fresh sushi, sashimi and delicious cocktails make this restaurant a favorite on the island. Enjoy your sushi, which combines traditional Japanese cuisine with some Mexican touches, while overlooking the town.
El Chapulim
There is no menu at El Chapulim, the chef simply gives you a list of his daily creations. Only the freshest ingredients are used, guaranteeing a delicious meal. Get here early because it is very popular.
Dona Rosita
This small restaurant that appears to be part of Rosita’s house is a great place to get an economical and tasty meal. Rosita is warm and friendly and serves home-cooked style food that includes fresh seafood and fish dishes, abundant plates of pasta and freshly made juices. Dona Rosita’s is also a great place for breakfast.
Porque No
For delicious Italian-style gelato head to Porque No. The servings are large and the ice cream that comes in a good variety of flavors is nothing short of delicious. Be warned, if you go there on day one you will want gelato every day of your vacation.
