The Cancun Duty Free sections of the airport carry the regular liquor/tobacco stores, but also unique boutique stores carrying up-scale items such as perfumes, jewelry, accessories and clothing items.
F.A.Q.
Q: How much Alcohol am I allowed to take back?
A: It depends on the laws where you intend to arrive with the alcohol.
Generally you are allowed up to a certain amount. After that volume has been exceeded you require some form of an “Import Permit”.
Most jurisdictions allow a certain volume of spirits to be “duty free”. Any volume “declared” above the duty free amount will have duty attached to it, which you must pay. Same with tobacco products.
Q: Is it worth buying “duty free liquor”?
A: That depends on where you are staying or if you plan on going into Playa del Carmen or downtown Cancun City.
If you are staying at a mega resort on the Mayan Riviera your resort will have a Liquor Store. In fact it will have a few. The bottles here are generally more expensive than duty free. The same bottle will be cheaper on 10th Ave. in Playa than your hotel or duty free.
You can buy liquor and pack the bottle(s) in your luggage.
