THINGS TO DO IN COSTA MAYA – CHETUMAL

The Costa Maya is an area rich in history and replete with Mayan archeological sites and cenotes as well as a beautiful coastline and offshore reef. There is therefore a wealth of activities to be enjoyed when visiting the area.

WATER SPORTS

With a long length of coastline and a reef just a few miles offshore, it is not surprising that water-sports are a popular activity in the Costa Maya. It is a great place to dive, with cheaper options than elsewhere on the peninsular and the chance to dive with few other people around. Other water-based activities include snorkeling, water-skiing, fishing and sailing.

ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES

There are about 16 different archeological sites in the Costa Maya but the three most worth visiting are KohunlichDzibanche and Kinichna. If you want to explore all of the sites in one day you can take a tour or hire a car. These archeological zones are far less frequented than others in the Riviera Maya making them perfect for those who prefer to avoid the crowds.

MUSEUM OF MAYAN CULTURE

Hone up on your knowledge of the history of the region with a trip to the Museum of the Mayan Culture in Chetumal. Learn about the daily life of the ancient Maya, their rituals, beliefs and astronomical prowess while touring this excellent museum.

CENOTES

There are lots of cenotes doted around this stretch of coast and they are really worth exploring. There are tours that take you to a few different cenotes or your can hire a car and explore alone. Don’t forget your swimsuit!

BIRDING

The area around Costa Maya is rich in eco diversity and there are lots of interesting and rare birds that make the area their home. Take a birding tour with an experienced birder to have the chance to see a whole variety of bird species up close.
