The closest to Tulum (just a few minutes’ north on Highway 307), is Dreams Tulum Resort and Spa. If you’re looking for an entertaining vacation with lots of activities and commotion, this is a lively spot. It’s a beautiful, family-friendly resort with huge swimming pools and wedding packages on the spacious beachfront.

TIP: Every building on the Boca Paila beach road relies on solar or generator power. Wifi can be a little spotty at times. Keep in mind that this is part of the charm–you’re getting off the grid, but staying in the most sublime comfort!

Colibri Hotels

This property encompasses the separate hotels called Mi AmorEl Pez and Mezzanine, 3 of the most highly-rated hotels in the area (also a 2016 TripAdvisor winner). Mi Amor is one of the few hotels in Tulum with an infinity pool. Mezzanine is known for its excellent Thai restaurant. Decadent details include concierge and spa services, and suites outfitted with Nespresso machines and Malin + Goetz bath products, etc. This is a trendy, modern and elegant choice. Villa las Estrellas

Coco Tulum

There are first and second-storey cabañas right on the beach. The property has a cute treehouse ambiance, with sandy paths and lush greenery. The shared bathrooms are clean and well-kept. You can either rent a tent, bring your own, or stay in a cabaña steps away from the beach. There are shared bathrooms. It’s rustic but charming. You’re near Playa Paraiso, Playa Maya, and only a few minutes’ drive of the impressive Tulum ruins. (Boca Paila road, north of the fork)

This is an ecofriendly property with cozy bungalows connected by sandy paths. Shoes not required! Get away from it all and enjoy a the simple beach life. HOTELS IN TOWN

For travelers who want to be in the center of things, staying in Tulum itself is a good option. There are several small hotels and cozy bed & breakfast spots. The town is not large, so you can easily explore on foot or by bike. You’re not directly on the beach, but you can be in a few minutes!

Palms Tulum

This little luxury hotel offers apartment-style rooms, with kitchenettes, sofa beds, etc. There’s a nice swimming pool in the courtyard. Bikes are provided free of charge, and the beach is about a 20-min bike ride away. Located a block from the main highway junction, you’re close to banks, laundromats, pharmacies, and fantastic restaurants. (Highway 307 & Boca Paila road)

Hotel Latino

 
This is a chic hotel that’s pretty much smack-dab in the middle of the strip in town. Staying here will allow you to sample all the charm Tulum has to offer! Some suites have private balconies and plunge pools. There is also a shared swimming pool. (Located on Andromeda Street between Orion Sur & Beta Sur) This award-winning B&B is a bit off the beaten path, but not far from downtown Tulum. It’s a quiet little oasis, with pretty grounds, hammocks and comfortable rooms. It’s very close to the bus station. (Located on Sagitario Poniente Street #54)

Mango Tulum

 
This rustic hotel is simple, quiet, and laid-back. It’s located on the west end of town, near the San Francisco de Assis grocery store. There’s a pool so you can cool off after a day of sightseeing or shopping. (Located on Calle Polar and Avenida Coba – behind OXXO) A luxury boutique hotel, this is an absolutely charming spot. It has a gorgeous pool, and several suites have kitchens. It’s near the main highway junction, so you’re not far from the Tulum ruins or from shops and restaurants on the main strip. (Located on Calle Andromeda between Scorpion Sur and Coba Sur)

VACATION HOMES

Renting a vacation home gives you much more freedom than staying at a hotel or resort. It really is a whole other level of luxurious seclusion! There are several vacation homes and condos to rent in the Tulum area or in nearby subdivisions.

Casa Mandala

 
What makes this place wonderful is its idyllic location. It’s central to everything on the beach road, but private and tucked away. Walk or bike anywhere you need, it’s all nearby! You can rent any or all of the 3 dwellings on the property. There’s a swimming pool and beautiful stretch of silky-soft beach with hammocks and lounge chairs. Hotel Zamas

 
Although this is mainly a hotel, there are a few private homes that make up part of it. Casa Laura is one of them. It exudes a rustic elegance and has beautiful bay views. Rent the entire home if you choose, it includes a large kitchen, several balconies, 3 master suites and additional bedrooms to accommodate a big clan. The central location is great; near dive shops, restaurants (like Mateo’s) and bicycle rental shops. This is the place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Stay barefoot all day! Aldea Zama

 
You will see this new condo complex as you drive from Tulum town towards the beach, on the Boca Paila road. (The beach is just a few minutes’ drive away, or about a 10-minute bike ride.) These luxury condos are quiet, spacious, with a huge shared swimming pool. Expect modern conveniences in this home-away-from-home. It’s a great choice for families, or for those wanting a long-term stay. It’s very close to the Chedraui grocery store. Renting a car would be helpful if you stay here. Tankah Bay

 
This tranquil bay north of Tulum (about 5 minutes’ drive), is dotted with gorgeous luxury homes. Families or large groups traveling together who are looking for seclusion will love this spot. The sleepy community has a few restaurants and there is a cenote (freshwater sinkhole) with kayaking and diving/snorkeling just a short walk away. Enjoy birdwatching and combing the beach for shells and driftwood.

 

Some of the larger, more notable properties here include Villa Pelagia and Villa Paloma. They have private swimming pools, beautiful grounds, several outdoor terraces, etc. Unwind in style! Renting a car is a good idea if you plan to stay here and want to get around easily for excursions and day trips.
