For travelers who want to be in the center of things, staying in Tulum itself is a good option. There are several small hotels and cozy bed & breakfast spots. The town is not large, so you can easily explore on foot or by bike. You’re not directly on the beach, but you can be in a few minutes!
This little luxury hotel offers apartment-style rooms, with kitchenettes, sofa beds, etc. There’s a nice swimming pool in the courtyard. Bikes are provided free of charge, and the beach is about a 20-min bike ride away. Located a block from the main highway junction, you’re close to banks, laundromats, pharmacies, and fantastic restaurants. (Highway 307 & Boca Paila road)
This is a chic hotel that’s pretty much smack-dab in the middle of the strip in town. Staying here will allow you to sample all the charm Tulum has to offer! Renting a vacation home gives you much more freedom than staying at a hotel or resort. It really is a whole other level of luxurious seclusion! There are several vacation homes and condos to rent in the Tulum area or in nearby subdivisions.

You will see this new condo complex as you drive from Tulum town towards the beach, on the Boca Paila road. (The beach is just a few minutes’ drive away, or about a 10-minute bike ride.) These luxury condos are quiet, spacious, with a huge shared swimming pool. Expect modern conveniences in this home-away-from-home. It’s a great choice for families, or for those wanting a long-term stay. It’s very close to the Chedraui grocery store. Renting a car would be helpful if you stay here. This tranquil bay north of Tulum (about 5 minutes’ drive), is dotted with gorgeous luxury homes. Families or large groups traveling together who are looking for seclusion will love this spot. The sleepy community has a few restaurants and there is a cenote (freshwater sinkhole) with kayaking and diving/snorkeling just a short walk away. Enjoy birdwatching and combing the beach for shells and driftwood.
Some of the larger, more notable properties here include Villa Pelagia and Villa Paloma. They have private swimming pools, beautiful grounds, several outdoor terraces, etc. Unwind in style! Renting a car is a good idea if you plan to stay here and want to get around easily for excursions and day trips.
